Ever since cruise ships have begun sailing the seas there has been an unspoken competition for the biggest cruise ship in the world. The two main players in this competition in recent years have been Carnival and Royal Caribbean.

Carnival is a Miami based company that includes P & O Princess and Cunard and recently took delivery of the massive Queen Mary 2.  Weighing in at just under 150,000 tons the Queen Mary 2 was the biggest cruise ship in the world when Carnival took delivery.  At this time Royal Caribbean was already planning bigger as they were already building 160,000 ton ships. The Queen Mary 2 can accommodate 2,620 passengers and is able to cross the Atlantic in 6 days, sailing from Southampton to New York or Florida.

Soon after the Freedom of Seas made by Royal Caribbean took to the ocean as well and took over the title of biggest cruise ship. The Freedom of the seas weighs in at 160,000 tons and does seven day cruises from Miami to the Caribbean. But having one massive ship was not enough, Royal Caribbean built two sister cruise ships to the Freedom of the Seas, the Independence of the Seas and the Liberty of the seas.

The three sister ships are supposed to be exactly alike in size but when the Independence was finished it was discovered that somehow the ship was one inch longer than the other two cruise ships. The Independence of the Seas is a marvel to anyone who views her and with 15 passenger decks, a dining room that can accommodate thousands at one time, 9 different restaurants, an ice skating ring, mountain climbing, a surf simulator, mini golf and a movie theater, it’s no wonder why.

But for Royal Caribbean the Independence of the Seas was not enough and they began working on an even bigger ship. This ship was called Oasis of the Seas and from its very beginning was a ship unlike any the world had seen before. The Oasis of the Seas when completed will be over 220,000 tons, a massive upgrade from the ships Royal Caribbean built before. When it sets sail it will be the biggest cruise ship in the world and it seems like it will be without competition for a very long time.

In comparison to other cruise ships, the Oasis of the Seas has 16 decks, 2700 staterooms (which can accommodate anywhere from 2-4 people), 7 different neighborhoods, a park, two surf simulators, an outdoor aqua theater, ice skating rings, rock climbing, movie theaters, swimming pools, this ship has something for everyone. The biggest cruise ship in the world is also the most exciting cruise ship the world has ever seen.
