How to Book a Cruise?

There are a number of important decisions to be made when planning to book a cruise vacation. Deciding when to travel, choosing the destination and the cruise line, picking out shore excursions and on-board activities – all are important parts of the cruise planning process. Careful planning helps ensure that you get your dream vacation.

Most travelers want to get the best deal possible on their trip, but in order to know if you’re getting a good deal, you need to know what the average price of your cruise normally is. As part of your cruise planning, do some research and learn the typical fares for the trip you want. Be sure not to compare apples to oranges – a two-week Alaska trip is not the same as a one-week Caribbean vacation. Be sure to consider the price differences between cabin options, as well as the costs of any extra activities as well. A slightly higher cruise that includes more of the activities that you’re interested in may be a better value than a cheaper cruise and adding extras a la carte.

Always read the fine print on sales and specials offered. Does the sale apply only to a particular cabin category? Is the upgrade only available for certain destinations? Be sure that you know what is included in the price quoted – port charges, booking fees, insurance and taxes can add up fast. Find out the total cost with all charges included before you book a cruise.

An often overlooked issue when cruise planning is the cost of getting to the port. If you’re comparing cruises leaving different ports, don’t forget to factor in the cost of travel to the port city when making a decision. A deal won’t be such a deal if it costs more to get to the port than is saved on the cruise, so do your homework before you book a cruise.

Compare the costs of booking airfare on your own to the price if booked through the cruise line. You might be able to arrange lower ticket prices booking for yourself, but there are other issues to consider. Of course, it’s more convenient to have only one set of travel arrangements, so there’s a point in favor of booking your flight when you book a cruise. And when making your flight arrangements through the cruise line, your transfers and luggage handling are covered between the airline and the ship, which is not only easier but may also save money.

Possibly the biggest advantage to arranging your flight through the cruise line is the peace of mind. If your flight is delayed or canceled for some reason, the cruise line and the airline will deal with making the arrangements to re-schedule to get you to your ship. They may even delay a departure until you arrive. If you’ve made your flight arrangements yourself, however, you could be on your own.

Now that the hard part of cruise planning is behind you, compare the offers. You still will have to decide if you’re ready to book now, or whether to wait and see if prices will drop or a better offer will come along. If the vacation of your dreams is in sight, then the time has come to book a cruise.

Planning Best Budget Cruises

The luxurious world cruise may be the ultimate dream vacation, but in reality, most cruise planning is done on a budget. If your first thought when it comes to a cruise budget is steerage on the Titanic, though, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. With a little planning, a dream cruise is within everyone’s reach.

One of the best ways to get a deal is also one of the simplest – book your cruise well in advance. Many of the best deals are offered to travelers who can make their reservations 6, 12, even 18 months ahead of their departure. Cruise planning this far out is rewarded with reduced fares or offers of upgrades. As departure dates approach and ships fill, prices increase along with demand.

An exception to the “plan ahead” motto would be for travelers with flexible schedules and the ability to leave at a moment’s notice (in cruise terms, “a moment’s notice” may be 3 to 6 weeks). Last minute passengers may have their cruise budget lightened with steeply reduced fares. Remember, though, those fares are usually for the least desirable rooms. If a luxury suite or an ocean view is important to you, do your cruise planning in advance.

Your accommodations play a big role in your cruise budget. If you want an ocean view, be prepared to pay more, and if you’re cruising the Mediterranean, it may be worth it – it’s all about the view. But if you’re headed across the Atlantic on open water for days, that view is going to be nothing but water. If the services and amenities are the same for all rooms, do you want the view?

When you cruise will also affect the price. Cruise season includes not only the high season of peak demand, but also the shoulder seasons, the months just before and after the peak. Lower demand means better deals, and often less crowded facilities. Those smaller crowds will also apply to the on-shore activities as well, possibly another bonus for your cruise budget.

If you’re interested in luxuries like spa time, check out the in-port deals offered. When the ship empties, demand for these services drops, and so do the prices. Don’t be afraid to ask the spa to help you arrange a personalized package. It’s no bargain to select a package that fits into your cruise budget if it doesn’t include the services you want.

One last area where your cruise planning can pay off is on shore days. If you have a particular activity that your heart is set on, book in advance through the cruise to insure availability, but if that’s not the case, wait to plan those excursions. There may be a better price for unfilled seats after arrival at port, or you might choose a private tour on shore. If you arrange a private tour, agree on a price and what you’ll see before you start the tour.

If you prefer independent sight-seeing to the offered tours, it is an advantage because not only you can personalize your own shore time, you can also help the cruise budget at the same time. Before traveling, take advantage of the tourist boards for your ports of call. Most offer free travel planners that include maps, brochures for local attractions, and calendars of events, and many of these offerings may also be free or low-cost.

For travelers on a budget, careful cruise planning is the key to keeping the cruise budget in line.
