Working on a cruise ship can be an exhilarating adventure. You can visit places that you would otherwise only fantasize about, and get paid while doing it. And if you have the necessary experience and/or desire to work on deck, here some positions that might suit you.

The captain
If you’re looking for stature, this is the position for you.  You’ll need the necessary experience and educational background to be able to oversee the operation of the ship, and if you have it, it can be financially rewarding.  Companies usually require more than five years of experience as an assistant captain (staff captain) and the appropriate maritime-related degree.  Salaries can top the $10,000 per month level.  Plus your room and board is paid for.

The captain’s assistant
If you’re not ready for the big leagues, consider a position as the captain’s assistant, also termed the staff captain.  Basically, this person is second in command and is responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of the vessel.  To be considered for the position, you’ll need similar experience behind your belt and a degree from a recognized maritime institute of learning.  Salaries are still respectable – about $6,000 per month, plus, of course, free room and board.

First officer on board
The first officer on board a vessel is responsible for supervising operations on the bridge.  This person also oversees all of the nautical equipment on board, as well as emergency equipment needed for a fast exit, such as the ship’s lifeboats.  Again, previous experience is required as well as the appropriate education.

Security personnel
Security staff ensures the safety and well being of the passengers on board.  These individuals check suspicious luggage, as well as any suspicious passengers or crew on board.  They are also responsible for overseeing any safety training and implementation of safety procedures if necessary.  Previous experience in the security profession is necessary for this position.

Deckhand
A deckhand basically refers to the ship’s handyman on board.  This person is responsible for handling any maintenance issues that pop up while at sea.  Though no real experience on board a ship is needed, it’s important that the individual has a wide working knowledge of general repair jobs.

Able seaman
This position is open to those with little or no experience.  The able seaman’s responsibilities include general type maintenance jobs.
